An employee of Your Black Muslim Bakery confessed to police that he had shot Chauncery Bailey. 19-year old handyman Devaughndre Broussard said he had been angered by stories Chauncery had written about the Black Muslims, the bakery, and its employees.
According to authorities, Mr Bailey had been working on a story about the finances of the group. Six people were being questioned last night, but there are not expected to be further charges of murder.
Yusuf Bey IV has been partially disowned by his family. Yusuf Bey IV took control of Your Black Muslim Bakery after a power struggle in which members of the family were shot at or murdered. Shamir Bey, one of the many sons of Yusuf Bey senior, who died of colon cancer on September 30, 2003, cliamed his father had run the bakery legally for 34 years.
The situation inside the bakery was unsanitary when police raided, with dead rats on the roof and rat droppings inside the bakery that the establishment has been closed down by California's Department of Fish and Game and the Alameda County District Attorney's Office environmental crimes unit. It is said that fines for poor sanitation at a place where food is prepared could run to $5,000 per day.
Additionally weapons were taken from the bakery during Friday's raid. Spent ammunition was also recovered from the rooftop.
Chauncery Bailey appeared on KSBT Soulbeat TV. According to one of the journalist's friends, he had received numerous threats "all the time" from the Black Muslims at Your Black Muslim Bakery.
