Vaccines and autism linked

Three main hypotheses about the possible link of vaccinations and autism are reviewed in a new report. Fear about vaccines is driving down vaccination rates.

An extensive new review summarizes the many studies refuting the claim of a link between vaccines and autism. The review, in the February 15, 2009 issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases and now available online, looks at the three main hypotheses and shows how epidemiological and biological studies refute these claims.

"When one hypothesis of how vaccines cause autism is refuted, another invariably springs up to take its place," said study author Paul Offit, MD, of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Fears about vaccines are pushing down immunization rates and having a real impact on public health, he added. Vaccine refusal is contributing to the current increase in Haemophilus influenzae cases in Minnesota&'including the death of one child&'and was a factor in last year's measles outbreak in California.

The controversy began with a 1998 study in The Lancet that suggested a link between the combination measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and autism. Dr. Offit and co-author Jeffrey Gerber, MD, PhD, also of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, reviewed more than a dozen large studies, conducted in five different countries, that used different methods to address the issue, and concluded that no data supported the association between the MMR vaccine and autism. The correlation between MMR vaccine and the appearance of autism symptoms is merely coincidental, the authors say, because the MMR vaccine is given at the age when autism symptoms usually appear.

Also hypothesized as a cause has been the ethylmercury-containing preservative thimerosal, which was used in vaccines for over 50 years. However, the authors review seven studies from five countries that show that the presence or absence of thimerosal in vaccines did not affect autism rates.

The third suggestion has been that the simultaneous administration of multiple vaccines overwhelms or weakens the immune system. The authors explain that children's immune systems routinely handle much more than the relatively small amount of material contained in vaccines. Furthermore, today's vaccines contain many fewer immune-triggering components than those from decades past. Regardless, autism is not triggered by an immune response, the authors say.

With outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases on the rise due to some worried parents choosing not to vaccinate their children, Dr. Offit said, "Parents should realize that a choice not to get a vaccine is not a risk-free choice. It's just a choice to take a different, and far more serious, risk."

So Offit's at it again...somehow I'm reminded of the story of the guy who's caught in flagrante delicto with another woman by his wife, and leaps out of bed and says, "I can explain everything. Now are you going to believe me or your lying eyes?" Over and over and over again, parents report that their kids reacted in various telling ways to their shots - high-pitched screaming, inconsolable crying, running high temperatures, going floppy, losing eye contact, etc etc - and subsequently lapsed into various brain-damage conditions, like ASD; and medicos like vaccine-patent-holder Offit say over and over and over again that it's all due to 'coincidence'.

No wonder their ep studies continue to tell them what they want them to report; studies that aren't worth the toilet paper they're written on. Gi-go: garbage in, garbage out.

The Denmark study has been shown to have been methodologically flawed; ditto Fombonne's Canadian study - in ways that are obvious, not innocent error. This whole thing is now obvious: this isn't about science. It's about ideology. And children sacrificed to that god.

Got news for you, Offit et al. Your day is done. Parent power is just getting started. Get out of the way, or get run over. It's time for the truth - the whole truth, this time. Not your expedient 'coincidences'.

Yes, vaccines have value. They are also unsafe. They need to be made safer, or they are going to continue to be boycotted, until that message is heard. And it WILL be heard. The medical profession has used up its capital of respect on this issue. It's going to have to earn it back. Which means truth-telling; and apologizing.

We're waiting. In the meantime, we're going for whatever biomeds will help our children, to overcome their iatrogenic conditions. Like the title of the article says.

[p'>Maybe someone should tell the US Federal Court and President Obama. [/p'> [p'>Despite the best efforts of the Department of Health and Human Services, the Court has decided vaccines and autism are linked in several cases. [/p'>

Why is a story bunking the link between vaccines and autism called VACCINES AND AUTISM LINKED ?!!?!?!?(duh)

It is not that Paul Offit doesn't get it...I am sure he is not so stupid that he cannot understand real science...it is just that it has been highly financially lucrative for him to side with Big Pharma (and tout their fairy tale studies as anything but the pre-determined, bought and paid for junk-science that they are).

Big Pharma either scares you off, kills you off or buys you off. They are one of the few industries that have the power, money and influence to do it. Virtually everyone on the side of vaccines is on Big Pharma's pay roll in one way or another....follow the money.
