Speculation has run wild about the identity of the creature or creatures found in the sewers beneath Cameron, North Carolina, by a videocam that trailed beneath the city. Some have identified the creature as perhaps a form of bryozoan, cnidarian, slime mold, and some creature from outer space.
One plausible theory emerged at DeepSeaNews.com that holds that it may actually be a mass of invertebrate worms that normally inhabit stagnant water in ponds, lakes, and streams. They may be tubificids (Naididae) of the genus Tubifex that have balled together since in the warren of sewers there was no soil they began to coil around each other. When one worm contracts in response to stimulus, such as the videocam light, the rest of the swarming worms contract in unison.
