The leader of the Independent Media Trade Union in Kyiv is urging Prosecutor-General Oleksandr Medvedko to publicize a list of journalists killed in Ukraine since the country gained independence.

Yuriy Lukanov, the head of the union, said the list should be made public before September 16 -- the Day of Deceased Journalists in Ukraine.

He also says the list should show how many murders of journalists have been solved and how many remain unsolved.

Lukanov says such detailed information would help Ukrainian society gain a clear picture of how dangerous it is to work as a journalist and to what extent media workers are protected by law enforcement officers.
