Ukrainian Shot Dead By Russian Border Guards

Russian border guards have shot dead a Ukrainian citizen who they say was trying to illegally cross the Russian-Ukrainian border, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.

KHARKOV, Ukraine -- Russian border guards have shot dead a Ukrainian citizen who they say was trying to illegally cross the Russian-Ukrainian border, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.

A Ukrainian border guard official said the man was trying to cross the border by car in order to reach Ukraine's Kharkov region.

He reportedly did not respond to calls by Russian border guards to stop his car and was shot dead.

Russian officials said he was trying to smuggle unnamed technical equipment into Ukraine.
