A 2-year-old boy was hospitalized in the town of Barreriras in Bahía State, Brazil, in critical condition with a perforated lung following the discovery of over 50 needles lodged in his body. The boy was admitted to an intensive care unit on December 13.
His mother, who works as a maid, says she had no idea how the objects entered her son’s body.
X-rays show dozens of the metal objects in the boy’s legs, chest, abdomen, neck, and legs. His symptoms had included vomiting and severe abdominal pain. His mother, Maria Souza Santos, said that she regularly left the child in the care of his grandmother while she worked.
The head physician at the hospital told the media that only those objects currently causing harm to the boy will be surgically removed.
