Haiti: Aid coming from Latin American Christians

The Bishops' Conferences of Mexico, Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Chile have announced the creation of a national collection to aid the rescue of the Haiti, following the January 12 earthquake. The Churches in Latin America have asked the international community to provide for immediate and urgent needs and have invited Christians to solidarity with Haiti.

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Chile has announced a second collection to be taken up from congregations on January 23 and 24th. Proceeds will go to Caritas Chile, which is channeling aid to the local church in Haiti.

The Bishops of Bolivia, Brazil and Ecuador have reported a similar initiative in each country. “With the aid of the specialized team of Caritas International, the resources will be distributed in coordination with local organizations in Haiti," according to the Bishops' Conference of Chile.

The Mexican bishops have also urged "all Catholics and people of goodwill to pray for this sister nation and cooperate generously in favor of our Haitian brothers."
