Russian Soccer Fans End Hunger Strike After Players Are Paid

Fans of the Krylya Sovetov (Wings of the Soviets) soccer club in the Russian city of Samara have ended their hunger strike after the team's players received their unpaid wages, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

SAMARA, Russia -- Fans of the Krylya Sovetov (Wings of the Soviets) soccer club in the Russian city of Samara have ended their hunger strike after the team's players received their unpaid wages, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Players were paid their salaries for the last two months. At the same time Viktor Razveyev, who captained the team in the 1980s, was appointed the club's new vice president.

Seven fans began the hunger strike on March 9 in support of the team's unpaid players.

Sergei Leibgrad, the chairman of the team's fan club, told RFE/RL that the team's supporters still demand to see a plan to resolve the team's financial crisis and that General Director Yury Makeyev and President Igor Zavyalov be sacked.

Leibgrad said their mismanagement is the reason the club is in a financial crisis.

The Krylya Sovetov club -- which plays in the Russian Premier League -- has a total debt of more than $25 million. The team finished 10th in the league last year.
