Catastrophe or clever marketing? A UFO at the Dome of the Rock

Article Tools

A YouTube video that purports to show a UFO hovering over the Dome of the Rock at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem is causing debate between believers and cynics, leading some to theorize that it is a transparent fraud designed to stir up interest in a coming film. The short video has audio of several so-called 'witnesses' who see a ball of light appear to descend from the heavens and then briefly hover over the shrine that is revered by Muslims throughout the world.

Dated January 28, 2011 the wobbly, digital and shows a bright dot of light that maintains its position for almost half a minute and then, with a a sudden flash, it flies straight up at high speed.

In the following days, other such videos were uploaded to back up the original footage. For example, one of the videos was taken a few hundred yards from the Dome of the Rock,  Temple Mount, records the exclamations from 'witnesses,'  including "Holy shit!" and "We've seen them in Mississippi like this... but never like this."

A third video, shot from another angle, shows a composite showing all three videos running together. Those who do not believe in UFOs were quick to theorize that this may be a form of 'guerrilla' marketing.

The Dome of the Rock marks the place that, in Sunni Muslim tradition, is where Mohammed ascended to heaven. The shrine itself is frequently the source of contention in Israel. It is located on the Foundation Stone of the Second Temple of Solomon, which is also revered by Judaism.
