The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams - who leads the worldwide Anglican Communion - spoke in a video distributed by Lambeth Palace about the commitment implied by marriage. Today, as he noted in his remarks to Prince William and Catherine - who are now styled as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - is the "festival of St Catherine of Siena".
The couple pronounced their vows in London's historic Westminister Abbey, with Queen Elizabeth and consort Prince Philip in attendance, along with Prince Charles and his wife the Duchess of Cornwall. Along with the parents of the former Catherine Elizabeth Middleton, there were also crowned heads of Europe, including the King and Queen of Spain, and of Greece as well. Uncrowned kings and queens of the world of celebrity were also in attendance, including footballer David Beckham and wife, and singer Elton John and companion.
Archbishop Williams, in speaking about the royal wedding, referred to the "delight" and "mystery" of marriage. In speaking about William and Catherine, he said that they are both "deeply unpretentious" people who are taking their own commitment to marriage seriously. Prince William's own parents made headlines around the world as their marriage unraveled. It has been speculated that Prince William is anxious to form a stable marriage and family life.
