Egypt: the names of Christian martyrs released

Article Tools

On October 9, 2011, a march by Coptic Christians in Cairo to demand an end to the ongoing persecution and discrimination ended with the death of up to 48 Coptic Christian protestors who were beaten, gunned down and run-over by military armoured vehicles in a rampage directed by Egyptian Army personnel, with the assistance of local Islamic extremists.

Official Egyptian spokespersons claim that the Copts opened fire on police and military personnel who then responded with gunfire. There were also groups of civilians, wielding bludgeons and swords, who attacked the unarmed Coptic protesters and non-Christian allies. Estimates of the number of protesters killed have varied, ranging from 23 to almost 50. One source cites a figure of 35 dead, 274 wounded. At least 12 Egyptian army personnel were killed as well.
