The president's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., said former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci “pretty much nailed it” when criticizing former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon during a July phone call with a journalist. Trump Jr. referred Scaramucci's explosive rant about Bannon and former chief of staff Reince Preibus that eventually merited Scaramucci’s dismissal as White House communications director a short time later. Bannon and Priebus were also dismissed by President Trump.

“I’m not Steve Bannon, I’m not trying to suck my own c---. I’m not trying to build my own brand off the f---ing strength of the president. I’m here to serve the country,” Scaramucci told The New Yorker's Ryan Lizza.

Quotes by Bannon from an upcoming book on the Trump White House became known on Wednesday, in which Bannon reportedly said that a meeting Trump Jr. had with a Russian lawyer last year was “treasonous." Bannon also said there was "zero chance" President Trump was unaware of the meeting. In an unusual statement, Trump railed against Bannon, declaring "Steve Bannon has nothing to do with me or my Presidency.” Trump added, “When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind.” Trump dismissed Bannon in August. Bannon returned to Breitbart News as executive director.

Following backlash against Bannon’s comments, Trump Jr. tweeted, "When Bannon has lost Breitbart, he's left with ... nothing." As for Scaramucci, nicknamed “The Mooch,” he tweeted, “I said what I said in the Summer: take out the expletives and pay closer attention.” Responding to Trump Jr. Scaramucci tweeted, “We are a team. Teams stick together no matter what.”
