Breitbar News publisher Stephen K. Bannon, who was a White House chief strategist, said at a Monday night rally in Alabama that GOP will soon face a "day of reckoning." Bannon told the crowd, “For Mitch McConnell and Ward Baker and Karl Rove and Steven Law — all the instruments that tried to destroy Judge Moore and his family — your day of reckoning is coming.” Bannon is is backing former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore in a runoff Republican primary race against incumbent Sen. Luther Strange (R-Ala.). Trump has endorsed Strange.
A veteran of the successful campaign that brought Trump to the White House, Bannon was referring to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), as well as Republican worthies, Karl Rove, Ward Baker, and Steven Law. “But more important, for the donors who put up the [campaign] money and the corporatists that put up the money, your day of reckoning is coming, too.”
For his part, Trump campaigned for Strange on Friday at an appearance in Huntsville, having endorsed Strange before the primary. The winner of Tuesday's runnoff race will move on to the general election in December to defend the seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Strange was appointed to fill the seat when Sessions moved to the Trump administration. Currently, however, Moore is leading Strange by an average of 11 percent, according to Real Clear Politics.
