On Monday, President Donald Trump fully endorsed Roy Moore in the race for the U.S. Senate currently raging in Alabama. The December 12 special election pits the former judge against Democrat Doug Jones in a race in which the margin between the two has tightened over the last month.

Trump tweeted, “Democrats refusal to give even one vote for massive Tax Cuts is why we need Republican Roy Moore to win in Alabama. We need his vote on stopping crime, illegal immigration, Border Wall, Military, Pro Life, V.A., Judges 2nd Amendment and more. No to Jones, a Pelosi/Schumer Puppet!” In a second tweet, Trump wrote: “Putting Pelosi/Schumer Liberal Puppet Jones into office in Alabama would hurt our great Republican Agenda of low on taxes, tough on crime, strong on military and borders...& so much more. Look at your 401-k’s since Election. Highest Stock Market EVER! Jobs are roaring back!”

While some news outlets show that Moore and Jones are nearly tied, the current Real Clear Politics average of polls shows Moore is ahead by 3.2 points. A CBS/YouGov poll shows Moore ahead by 6 points, as does a poll by the Emerson College polling organization. On November 29, the FiveThirtyEight website noted that Moore had pulled ahead after website reporting of alleged sexual misdeeds of decades ago. Moore had lost ground in the polls after allegations were leveled against him starting on November 9. The website noted that Change Research, Emerson College, and JMC Analytics had Moore leading Jones by 5 to 6 percentage points.

On Monday, the Moore campaign said that Trump called the Alabaman while flying on Air Force One on his way to a separate event in Utah. The president told Moore “Go get 'em Roy” before hanging up the phone.

In a statement, Moore declared: “I am honored to receive the support and endorsement of President Donald Trump. President Trump knows that the future of his conservative agenda in Congress hinges on this election. I look forward to fighting alongside the President to strengthen our military, secure our border, protect our gun rights, defend the sanctity of life, and confirm conservative judges to courts around this nation.” Moore said, “We had a good conversation over the phone today and are working together towards conservative victory on December 12.”
