Bai Macfarlane, long-time Spero contributor, will be speaking at international conference in Rome, sponsored by Human Life International. The conference, is entitled “’The Two Shall Be One’: The Creation of Adam and Eve and the Foundations of Holy Marriage,” and coincides with the visit of Pope Francis to Philadelphia on September 26. Macfarlane is the founder of Mary’s Advocates: a non-profit dedicated to upholding traditional marriage and the need for the Catholic Church to implement its own rules concerning separation and divorce.
The Catholic Church has an internal system of rules which it calls canon law. The first international compilation of canon law was instigated by Pope Pius X, who reigned from 1903 to 1914. He was later confirmed a saint. According to Catholic Online:
He also waged an unwavering war against the heresy and evils of Modernism, gave great impetus to biblical studies, and brought about the codification of Canon Law. His overriding concern was to renew all things in Christ. … His most important reform was to order the codification of the first Code of Canon Law, which collected the laws of the Church into one volume for the first time.
A reorganized system of canon law was published in 1983 and, according to Macfarlane, Catholics were never supposed to file for civil divorce without Church intervention first. The press release for the September 26th symposium on marriage declared, “At the end of the nineteenth century, the first wave of the modern assault on Holy Marriage began as social revolutionaries attempted to introduce divorce into Catholic countries.”
Macfarlane will be speaking on “What God Has Joined Together: The Current Marriage Crisis in the Light of the Original Creation and the Code of Canon Law.” In the closing line of her presentation, she will quote Pope Leo XIII, “I ask the Church to implement canon law and to do what Pope Leo XIII described in Arcanum: ‘soften the evils of separation by such remedies and helps as are suited to [the parties] condition’ and ‘never cease to endeavor to bring about reconciliation.’”
Human Life International (HLI) Rome plans to send the symposium presentations to the delegates at the Synod of Bishops on the Family, which occurs in Rome October 24 -25 of this year.
HLI Rome director Father Francesco Giordano will be making a presentation on “The Two Shall Become One: The Evils of Contraception and the Strengthening of Catholic Marriages through the Correct Teaching of Natural Family Planning.” Fr. Thomas Hickey, M.A., Theology (Faculty, Holy Apostles Seminary) will be discussing, “The Special Creation of Adam and Eve: The Foundation of the Church's Teaching on Holy Marriage.”
Regarding rumors that have been aired in the media about a supposed split between cardinals and bishops representing Germany, and those coming from Africa, concerning the distribution of the Eucharist to divorced re-married Catholics, Macfarlane told Spero, “From what I’ve been reading, there seem to be some bishops and cardinals who are on board with Modernism and Relativism, and who are more interested in keeping people in the pews than keeping them from sin. I trust that Christ guides the Church and its official teachings. Freedom from sin, and union with Christ, are the answer to everything.”
