“Saturday Night Live” continued its barrage of gibes against Donald Trump. Actor Alec Baldwin did an impression of the president for the opening of the show. However, SNL saved its most biting satire in a skit featuring actress Scarlett Johanson.
The skit featured a faux Ivanka Trump perfume ad. The real Ivanka Trump is known not only for being very close to her father, but also because she has taken on an important albeit informal role at the White House. In addition, her husband Jared Kushner advises the president on Middle Eastern affairs.
The faux perfume is dubbed “Complicit,” and thus seeks to show that Ivanka is complicit with the policies and rhetoric used by her father. The narrator in the video is heard to say, “She's Ivanka. And a woman like her deserves a fragrance all her own. A scent made just for her. Because she's beautiful. She's powerful. She's … Complicit.”
The narrator goes on to say, “She's a woman who knows what she wants, and knows what she's doing. Complicit.”
And while the faux Ivanka looks into a mirror to see Alec Baldwin portraying President Trump, the narrator says, “She doesn't crave the spotlight, but we see her. Oh, how we see her.”
When the narrator says, “A feminist. A champion. An advocate for women,” several on-screen women appear to be confused. “But, like, how?”
“Complicit: The fragrance for the woman who could stop all of this,” the narrator says, " but won't.”
