Long live the Pope: but who is he?

Article Tools

Tens of thousands of faithful gathered in St Peter’s Square in Rome to witness the election of a new Pope to lead the Catholic Church. Today, at approximately 7 PM local time, white smoke emerged from the Sistine Chapel, signalling that the as yet un-named man has accepted the challenge to take over the papacy. Within approximately one hour of the smoke signal, one of the members of the College of Cardinals will emerge from the pope’s balcony facing the historic square to announce “Habemus papam” – Latin for ‘We have a Pope.”
