On CNN’s “State of the Union,” Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) praised special counsel Robert Mueller's "stellar" reputation. Speaking on Sunday, Rubio praised the former FBI director’s ability to "conduct a full and fair and thorough investigation" into alleged collusion between Russia and the Trump political organization. "I believe he is going to conduct a full and fair and thorough investigation that we should have confidence in," Rubio said. The Florida senator was one of Donald Trump’s rivals in the primary elections last year.

Rubio said, "I’ll continue to believe that based on his reputation and years of service to our country unless there’s any evidence to the contrary."

Rubio was thus contradicting efforts made by President Trump’s personal legal team to address concerns over the legal assistants who are serving under Mueller. Three top lawyers on Mueller’s team have contributed to Democratic organizations and candidates, such as Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, thus raising concerns over partisanship.

Rubio said, however, that he does not believe Trump will dismiss Mueller as the special counsel leading the Russia probe. "I don’t believe that’s going to happen,” Rubio said.

According to a statement from the White House, the president has “no intention” of dismissing Mueller, despites leaks to the contrary.

Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow said on “Meet the Press” on Sunday that while Trump “does not fear an investigation,” he signalled concerns over leaks from Mueller’s team to the Washington Post and the New York Times.

Last week, Trump went to Twitter to slam the Russia investigation, calling it a “witch hunt.” “You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people! #MAGA,” Trump tweeted last Thursday. Sekulow said that the tweet was in response to the leaks.
