Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) told Fox News’ Neil Cavuto today that anyone responsible for releasing intelligence with regard to President-elect Donald Trump, whether fake or not, should be prosecuted and put in jail. He was referring to a dossier published by the Buzzfeed news site that claims that Russia has a video depicting Trump engaging in a perverse sex act with two prostitutes. Trump has vehemently denied the contents of the dossier, but has wondered publicly if the U.s. intelligence is involved.

“What I would say,” Paul said, “is that if there is private information that someone is blackmailing a public figure and the public figure or someone takes it to the intelligence agencies, you would think it would be private. And really, this is so important that I think whoever leaked it should be prosecuted.” Paul added, “Someone should go to jail. If this was an intelligence agency head talked to the media, they should go to jail. If it was the Obama administration, they should go to jail.”

“The reason is, you don’t want your public figures succumbing to blackmail.” Paul said. “Now he’s saying the information is false and I have to rely on his word on that. But let’s say any public official is being blackmailed. What are you supposed to do? You’re supposed to go to the FBI and give them the information.”

The Kentucky legislator went on to say, “But if you can’t trust the FBI to keep it secret and the FBI is going to tell the press what someone is blackmailing you about, what will happen is it will lead to where more public figures will be likely to be extorted or to be blackmailed.”

There is a possibility that the persons named in the dossier may sue the Buzzfeed news site for publishing a salacious dossier on activities attributed to Donald Trump. Buzzfeed published a dossier that says that Trump hired prostitutes in Russia to perform certain perverted acts, and that Russia possesses a video of the tryst.

At his January 11 press conference at Trump Tower, Trump criticized U.S. intelligence for supposedly circulating the hoax. “I think it’s pretty sad when intelligence reports get leaked out to the press. First of all, it’s illegal. These are classified and certified meetings and reports.”

Trump said during the press conference at Trump Tower that had personally overseen a sting operation to find out whether US intelligence officials were behind the leaks. After he had a meeting with intelligence officials without telling anyone on his staff, information from the meeting was leaked, thus proving that the source of the leak was within the U.S. intelligence community. “The meeting was held. They left, and immediately the word got out that I had a meeting.” Trump said, adding “It’s very unfair to the country. It’s very unfair to our country what’s happening,” and even comparing intelligence officials to Nazi Germany. “I think it’s a disgrace, and I say that … that’s something that Nazi Germany would have done and did do,” Trump said. “It may be the intelligence agencies – which would be a tremendous blot of their record if they did that,” Trump said.
