In a series of tweets, President Trump pointed out the irony that he is now being investigated by the man who he said had advised him to fire former FBI Director James Comey. confirmed Friday that he is under investigation for firing FBI Director James Comey. The probe that was originally seeking to find out whether elements of Trump’s presidential campaign colluded with Russians during the 2016 general election has reportedly expanded to determine whether the president fired Comey in an effort to obstruct justice.

In one of Trump’s tweets, it is unclear to whom he was referring. When Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the investigation, it was Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller to oversee it in the wake of Comey’s ouster. Rosenstein drafted a memo that accused Comey of bungling the earlier investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was Barack Obama’s secretary of state. Sessions then wrote a letter that deemed that Comey’s dismissal was warranted. It is a former FBI director, Robert Mueller III, who is currently heading the investigation. A series of leaks have emerged from the probe since his designation last week. However, Mueller has not released any public statements.

Trump’s Friday tweet read: “I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch Hunt.”

On Thursday, the Washington Post cited anonymous sources stating that Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner was under investigation while the paper also reported that Mueller was also investigating whether the president had attempted to obstruct justice when he allegedly suggested Comey drop an FBI investigation into Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser, as well as when he fired Comey.

Trump tweeted on Friday, "After 7 months of investigations & committee hearings about my 'collusion with the Russians,' nobody has been able to show any proof. Sad!" He also tweeted: "Despite the phony Witch Hunt going on in America, the economic & jobs numbers are great. Regulations way down, jobs and enthusiasm way up!"

Trump now has personal legal counsel to address the investigation. On Thursday, it was revealed that Vice President Mike Pence has also retained private counsel.
