House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was the subject of a rebuke from a Democrat colleague for her pejorative remark that “five white guys” were negotiating an immigration policy overhaul that was presented to President Donald Trump on Thursday. Pelosi suggested during her weekly press briefing that legislators, including Minority Whip Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), were unable of drafting good immigration policy because of the color of their skin.
“The five white guys I call them, you know,” Pelosi said. “Are they going to open a hamburger stand next or what?”

Hoyer, who has been in Congress for nearly 40 years and serves as Pelosi’s Number 2, was apparently not amused by the “Five Guys” hamburger chain reference to fellow negotiators Senate Majority Whip Sen. John Cornyn (R-tX), Senate Minority Whip Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), House Majority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly.

“That comment is offensive,” Hoyer told POLITICO. “I am committed to ensuring DREAMers are protected and I will welcome everyone to the table who wants to get this done.”

Pelosi also argued that a dearth of Congressional negotiators of brown skin would delay an immigration deal because “it would need sign-off from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and others.”
