Attorney Jay Sekulow, who is providing private legal counsel to President Donald Trump, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday that his client is not under investigation. Todd said that Trump should not fear an investigation if he has not done anything wrong, while he also claimed that Special Counsel Robert Mueller III is a “professional” and “not a political guy.”

Sekulow responded to Todd, saying:

“Everyday the Washington Post and the New York Times are utilizing supposed leaked information about supposed investigations of the President of the United States, so his legal team and the President respond.

“The tweet from the President was in response to the five anonymous sources purportedly leaking information to the Washington Post.

“He’s not afraid of the investigation–there is no investigation, I want to be clear here. There is not an investigation of the President of the United States, period.”

Sekulow was referring to a tweet Trump posted on June 16, in which he wrote: “I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch Hunt”

Mueller is a former director of the FBI who served under George W. Bush and Barack Obama. His successor, James Comey, was fired by Trump on the basis of a memo that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein sent to Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Sessions concurred with the findings of Rosenstein’s memo. Mueller is investigating alleged links between Trump’s political organization and Russian officials, as well as supposed meddling in by Russians in the 2016 general election.

Three members of Mueller’s legal team -- Jeannie Rhee, Andrew Weissman, and James Quarles -- have donated to Democratic presidential campaigns and organizations. According to Federal Election Commission filings, Rhee donated $5,400 to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign PAC Hillary for America; Weissmann donated six times to political action committees for Obama in 2008; Quarles, was an assistant special prosecutor on the Watergate Special Prosecution Force, donated to over a dozen Democratic PACs since the late 1980s.
