Former Fox News personality Piers Morgan, who now appears on the “Good Morning Britain” program, criticized Mayor Sadiq Khan of London, who has been sparring with President Donald Trump on Twitter ever since the deadly terrorist attack in the British capital on Saturday evening. On Twitter, Morgan wrote on Tuesday: “Before we scrap Donald Trump’s visit, Sadiq Khan, how about we scrap passports for all jihadists streaming back into the United Kingdom from Syria?”
Khan called for the British government to cancel a state visit by Trump after the president criticized him for security deficiencies in the British capital. The exchange between Trump and Khan followed the third deadly terrorist incident in the United Kingdom in as many months. On Saturday, three Muslim men conducted an attack on innocents, mowing down pedestrians on London Bridge and following up with stabbings in the Borough Market area. Seven people have died and several remain missing.
Appearing on Channel 4 News on Monday, Khan claimed that Trump is wrong about “many things” and that the planned state visit should not go forward. “I don’t think we should roll out the red carpet to the president of the USA in the circumstances where his policies go against everything we stand for,” he said. “When you have a special relationship it is no different from when you have got a close mate. You stand with them in times of adversity but you call them out when they are wrong. There are many things about which Donald Trump is wrong.” Early on Sunday morning, Khan tweeted a vow that terrorists “would not win” and added, “Londoners will see an increased police presence today and over the course of the next few days. There’s no reason to be alarmed.”
This prompted Trump to tweet a few hours later: “At least seven dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and mayor of London says there is ‘no reason to be alarmed!’” Trump tweeted. After the mayor’s office claimed that Khan had “more important things to do than respond to Donald Trump’s ill-informed tweet that deliberately takes out of context his remarks,” Trump responded hours later: “Pathetic excuse by London mayor Sadiq Khan, who had to think fast on his ‘no reason to be alarmed’ statement. [Mainstream media] is working hard to sell it!”
Piers Morgan is no stranger to Trump. He once appeared on Trump’s “Apprentice” show and has interviewed him in the past.
