President-elect Donald Trump tweeted today that approval rating polls are rigged against him. “The same people who did the phony election polls, and were so wrong, are now doing approval rating polls. They are rigged just like before,” Trump wrote. On Tuesday morning, a CNN/ORC poll indicated that Trump scored a 40 percent approval rating, which is 6 points lower than it was after Election Day and lower than the last three presidents.

Of those who responded to the poll, more than half are less confident now in Trump’s ability to accomplish the work of a president, due to statements he has made since he became president-elect.

Also, a  poll by ABC News/Washington Post poll that was also released today showed that 40 percent of those polled approve of Trump's handling of the presidential transition. In addition, 54 percent viewed him unfavorably. By way of comparison, each of the last four presidents had approval ratings of at least 72 percent for their handling of the transition. Last week, a Gallup poll indicated that approval for Trump was at 44 percent, while his disapproval rating was at 51 percent. That is the lowest approval rating the organization has yet to record for a president-elect prior to an inauguration.

While polls showed that Hillary Clinton was in the lead before Election Day in November, Trump surprised her and the public by outperforming her in several key states, including Michigan and Wisconsin, that Clinton was expected to cinch.
