Violence in Baja California Norte, the Mexican state that borders California, continues to escalate. On the night of October 18, local police officer Antonio Ruiz Vargas was found dead in his car just outside the residence of Catholic Bishop Jose Isidro Guerrero Macias of Mexicali.
Officer Ruiz Vargas was felled by several gun shots. He was not directly attached to the security at the residence, but had been on duty in the neighborhood because of multiple thefts, armed robberies and harassment suffered by residents, and worshippers entering or leaving the cathedral.
Mexicali police have not yet released a statement about the incident. Tijuana and Mexicali are the two cities in Baja California Norte that are feeling the brunt of the violence carried out by armed groups and drug cartels battlling for supremacy in the ongoing drug war in Mexico and along the shared U.S./Mexico border region. Killings and kidnappings, combat between narcoterrorists and security forces, and other acts of violence continue to occur in the borderlands.
