Appearing on Fox & Friends, Reagan-era official Bill Bennett slammed CNN during a July 4th appearance. Speaking to a tweet by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who dubbed the media “guardians to our democracy,” Bennett asked rhetorically what would be Americans’ preference: media or military?
Bennett said, “Free press is an important part of our democracy.” He added, “But if the bad guys are coming over the wall, who you do you want defending you: The staff at CNN or the United States Marine Corps?”
Bennett -- who served as Reagan’s drug war czar and Secretary of Education -- praised President Trump’s criticisms of the media. “I love this President and his aggressiveness about this,” Bennett said. “Some of the tweets, yeah, could be rephrased and reframed. But you know, I watched several presidents bow to the media, try to ingratiate themselves to the media. It doesn’t work.” One of Bennett's son is a Marine.
