On conservative Laura Ingraham’s show, veteran reporter and Fox News contributor Juan Williams said that all Democrats in the House of Representatives, including Rep. John Lewis of Georgia, should attend the upcoming inauguration to “celebrate America.” Lewis began a social media feud when he said in an NBC interview last week that Donald Trump is not a “legitimate” president. Lewis is joining at least 20 other Democrats of the House in boycotting the inauguration.

Williams told Ingraham that despite differences over politics, Democrats should “stay Americans first.” Speaking to Ingraham, who is also editor-in-chief of Lifezette online magazine, Williams said Democrats should acknowledge that the “peaceful transfer of power is worthy of your celebration. It’s what makes us, as Americans, special.”

“To me, you are locked into anger and dysfunction if you can’t acknowledge reality and start to deal with reality, and, in fact, try to shape reality going forward, build relationships,” Williams said.

Williams pointed out that relations between races and ethnic groups have declined during President Barack Obama’s two terms. He added that black Americans are still trying to determine how to respond to Trump’s victory.

"In much the way that I root for America, I root for Donald Trump's presidency," Williams said. "I hope that he — if he can do good things, it's not only black people who will have to stop and say thank you, but I think America will be like, 'Yeah, you know what? … It's worked.' Wouldn't that be good news?"”

Here is a list of the House Democrats who have announced that they will not celebrate the Inauguration. Missing from the list is Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey, who is the only black man of the Democratic party serving in the U.S. Senate.
