It was in Waco TX, where wacky adherents of the Branch Davidian sect squared off in a deadly siege with federal and state authorities in 1993, police arrested 22-year-old Michael Daniel on June 25 for having eaten the family dog.
Terrified family members rang the police on June 14 to report that the young man had assaulted them at home, and the chased a neighbor while barking and growling like a dog himself. While crawling on his hands and knees, it was then that Daniel turned on his canine friend, to beat and strangle and subsequently eat it. Daniel reportedly bit into the dog's flesh, while also tearing it apart. The dog died in the home.
According to local reports, Daniel allegedly had ingested 'K-2' a synthetic drug, also known as 'bath salts' on the street.
The attack in Waco has drawn comparisons to similar incidents in which 'bath salts' may have played a part. The first that came to public attention is the now famous Miami “Causeway Cannibal” incident, in which the homeless Ronald Poppo was attacked by Rudy Eugene - a Haitian man under the influence of the drug. Eugene was assailant was nude when he attacked, throwing Poppo to the ground and then devouring a portion of the homeless man's face. When police were unable to stop the addled assailant, they fired their weapons until he was dead. Poppo was treated in a hospital for his horrific wounds and is now in protracted recovery.
In Waco, police did not have to shoot Daniel. He was taken to Providence Hospital for treatment on June 14. However, Daniel got a surprise on June 25 when the law came knocking at his place of work. Police arrived to arrest him for 'Cruelty to Non-Livestock Animals.
The zombie meme continues, as K-2 and similar synthetic drugs are having a horrific effect on users. In Palmetto FL, 25-year-old Charles Baker was arrested after father-in-law Jeffrey Blake reported a vicious assault by the young man. Reportedly, while under the influence of drugs, Baker tried to take a bite out of Blake's arm. Baker's three children were living with Blake - their grandfather - while their mother is in jail. Baker's two sons, aged 8 and 4, and daughter aged 6, were present during the vicious assault as their father stripped naked and tore into Blake.
Manatee County sheriff's deputies used their stun-gun as many as seven times to subdue Baker, who at one point tore the wires from the stun-guns from his body. Father-in-law Blake assisted officers in subduing Baker. "It's something I never want to see again, that's for sure," Blake reportedly said.
