Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou has claimed victory in a presidential election.

Ma's opponent Tsai Ing-wen conceded defeat when, after some 90 percent of the vote was counted, preliminary results showed Ma, from the Nationalist Kuomintang party, with 51 percent of the vote and Tsai with some 46 percent.

A third candidate, James Soong, received 2.7 percent.

The presidential vote coincides with a poll for Taiwan’s 113-member parliament.
