Oldest Auschwitz deathcamp survivor passes away

Antoni Dobrowolski.

Antoni Dobrowolski, a Polish Jew who survived the horrors of the Auschwitz deathcamp, passed away in Debno, Poland, on October 21.

He was the oldest known survivor of the extermination camp that was established by Germany's National Socialists during the Second World War. Born in Wolbórz, Poland, in 1904.

Dombrowoski was 108 years old.

The feared Gestapo arrested Dombrowolski in 1942 as he clandestinely taught school children. The Nazis took him first to Auschwitz, and later to the camps at Gross-Rosen and Sachsenhausen. It was at the latter detention center that his was liberated by forces of the Soviet Union in the spring of 1945.

Adam Cyra, a historian at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum, determined that he was the oldest known survivor of the Auschwitz deathcamp where hundreds of thousands of the millions of Jews and other victims of racist Nazi oppression perished.

At Auschwitz, the largest Nazi concentration camp, more than 1 million human beings were put to death, most of them Jews.
