Obama and bad moon rising

Barack Obama gives victory speech after being re-elected to the presidency.

Barack Hussein Obama has been reelected as President of the United States of America . It was heartbreaking to read the polls showing that a majority of Catholics, including those who regularly attend Mass, voted for Obama. What seems even worse is that a majority of U.S. Catholic bishops probably voted for Obama’s first term. Are the sheep simply following their shepherds?

So what should families do now in the face of the reelection of a pro-statist, pro-abortion, and pro-sodomy president?

Contrary to many religious conservatives, I do not believe that the president is the primary determiner of the direction of our nation as much as he is a reflection of its culture. If my belief is true, then the future for our families is ominous as we face the collapse of Christian culture.

A century and a half ago, Cardinal Newman predicted the cultural, moral, and religious apostasy that we are living through. It was foreseen with great clarity by Pope Leo XIII in 1884 (see Christian Fatherhood, p. 143). C.S. Lewis warned of it a half century ago.

Fifteen years ago, Jim Burnham and I wrote in Christian Fatherhood about severe storms that threatened faith and family life. Eight years ago, I started giving talks entitled, “Fathering Amidst the Storm.”

Some thought that my “Fathering Amidst the Storm” talk was a little over the top with my apocalyptic concerns about a contemporary apostasy. Since I developed this talk shortly after being hit by Hurricane Charley, maybe they thought that I was temporarily traumatized by some ceiling drywall hitting my head. Yet, eight years later I stand by every word – with added intensity.

Perhaps what we all need is a bit of drywall to hit our heads to awaken us to the depths of apostasy that is transpiring before our eyes. It’s not a time for jokes, toasts, and cozy dining with an enemy of the Faith at the Waldorf-Astoria. Rather, it’s time to realize the utter seriousness of our situation and then fight for the Faith. It’s time to wake up!

If the reelection of President Obama doesn’t awaken Christians to the apostasy in our midst, then I frankly can’t imagine what possibly could. Will Christians finally realize that a bad moon is rising and that it’s past time to wake up and watch?

"But take heed to yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a snare; for it will come upon all who dwell upon the face of the whole earth. But watch at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of man." -- Luke 21:34-36
