Speaking to young California Republicans recently, GOP Rep. Duncan Hunter described President Donald Trump in colorful terms. Hunter said of Trump: “He’s an asshole, but he’s our asshole.” He made the remark after being asked, alongside Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA), what the president is really like. According to the San Diego Union Tribune, the meeting with the Riverside County Young Republicans took place in Murrieta.

A combat veteran and USMC officer, Hunter reportedly said, “He’s just like he is on TV.” The San Diego paper cited three on-the-record sources, as well as social media posts to make its claim. Whitney Walsh, who attended the event, said that Republicans on the scene “were fine with that answer,.” and “ate up Hunter’s assessment.”

A long-time supporter of Trump, Hunter once predicted that the president would have no honeymoon after his inauguration, especially with “Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi steering the priorities of congressional Democrats.” In a January 20 press release, Hunter applauded Trump’s choices of James Mattis and John Kelly, stating, “[Trump] must not forget that when Americans voted for real change, they really meant it,” stated Hunter in his January 20 release.

Facing re-election in 2018, Hunter and other Republicans are facing at least 20 Democrats who served in the Obama administration. Additionally, the Department of Justice is investigating allegations of misuse of campaign funds after the Office of Congressional Ethics alleged that he may have diverted campaign funds for personal use.
