In the cold open of “Saturday Night Live,” actor Alec Baldwin did a reprise in his recurring role as President Trump. In the skit, Baldwin plays Trump who phones the leaders of several countries while getting advice from Stephen K. Bannon as play by an “S.N.L.” cast member who dressed as the Grim Reaper.
Baldwin calls Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull of Australia (played by Beck Bennett), who reminds him of Barack Obama’s promise to accept 1,200 mostly Muslim refugees currently held in detention by Australia. Responding, Baldwin says, “No refugees. America first, Australia sucks. Your reef is failing. Prepare to go to war.” The skit thus repeated a narrative now oft-repeated, and now often denied, that Trump and Turnbull had a contentious phone call.
Next up was a call to President Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico of whom Baldwin says, “Guy who’s going to pay for the wall says what?” The next world leader Baldwin as Trump called was Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany. Baldwin says, “I’m going to write a memoir about this struggle, and call it ‘My Struggle’ – what would that be in German?” Finally, Baldwin calls the murderous dictator of Zimbabwe, President Robert Mugabe. Mugabe (played by Kenan Thompson) did not appear impressed, telling him “I will rip out your spine and drink from your skull.”
