Catholic Social Injustice: review of new American Life League video

religion | Oct 14, 2014 | By Stephanie Block

Over the the past several years, the nation’s premier pro-life organization, American Life League, has been investigating the bureaucratic sabotage of fundamental Catholic social teachings.

Which bureaucracy?

Why the one that sets the direction for the Catholic Church in the United States – the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).  This organization runs the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), an annual collection that has filtered millions into leftwing political “community organizations.”  This organization oversees Catholic Relief Services, which not only is mostly a secularized organization but has amended its mission to include left-wing political advocacy.  This organization oversees Catholic Charities, which together with CCHD pushes liberationist (Marxist “theology”) education in American Catholic parishes through a program called JustFaith.  In fact, various individuals and offices within the USCCB have, for years, been producing profoundly anti-Catholic, and therefore anti-justice, left-wing political materials.

And the anti-justice fact of left-wing politics is that it unabashedly promotes so-called “reproductive rights.”

So one can see why American Life League would find this problematic and, with such widespread abuse at such a high level, it’s hardly surprising to discover the poison is larger than any one country.  American Life League’s current research project has been Caritas Internationalis, the Vatican's social justice arm.

Michael Hichborn, American Life League’s Assistant Director of Media Relations, explains in a new video (See here) that Caritas Internationalis is on the governing body of the World Social Forum, an annual gathering of nongovernmental organizations and “advocacy campaigns” that seek “global solidarity.”

According to the American Life League video, the World Social Forum (WSF) internal documents argue for abortion and homosexual rights, as well socialist expansion.  A 2002 article on the WSF website, for example, says that the Forum is funded primarily by socialist governments; a 2004 article on the website states that “it is no surprise that the Communists and the new social groups are jointly working to host WSF.”

Yet another article, from 2005, applauds the Forum’s “diversity” – which is actually quite exclusive: “While all those who are at the Forum (or most at least!) acknowledge the need to come together to face the imperial power of globalisation led by the US, the WSF ‘open space’ continues to be a space that is bitterly contested at the level of ideas. The major actors in the WSF include the Left of various shades (communists, social democrats, fourth internationalists), religious groups (many ascribing to the “liberation theology” positions and genuinely opposed to imperialism) and NGOs.” [Amit Sen Gupta, “The World Social Forum Sprouts Wings,” 2-20-05, See: ForumsSocialMundial.org

The American Life League video builds its case carefully.  The World Social Forum is about as antithetical to Catholic teaching as it gets, committed to global decriminalization of abortion and  “population control” and homosexual “rights.”  The video gives numerous examples, taken from articles and Forum program notes that are on the WSF website.

So, what’s a nice Catholic organization like Caritas Internationalis doing on the governing body – The International Council – of the World Social Forum?  As late as 2013, it was an attending organization at the Forum and wrote: “Caritas has been involved in the WSF since its beginnings. Caritas believes it’s an opportunity to exchange ideas and to build the momentum towards real change.” See here. Caritas.org .

Michael Hichborn pulls the pieces together: “So, to be clear, by being on the International Council [of the WSF], Caritas is integral to the operation and actions of the World Social Forum….Given how intimately connected the World Social Forum has been with the promotion of communism, abortion, and homosexuality sine the very beginning, it’s impossible to see how any Catholic can participate in it, even speak positively about it, let alone having any involvement in its governance.”

The full American Life League Report can be accessed here. American Life League recommends respectfully contacting the current president of Caritas Internationalis, Cardinal Maradiaga, to ask that he “completely and immediately end all contact and association with the World Social Forum.”
