Pope applauds mother of paralyzed rock musician
Gustavo Cerati, one of Argentina's top rock musicians, suffered a stroke and is paralyzed. Pope Francis, in a letter, praised the rocker's mother for her forbearance and faith.
Pope Francis took time out to write a letter to the friend of Gustavo Cerati, an Argentine rock musician who has been hospitalized since 2010. Cerati’s mother, Lilian Clark spoke via telephone on the Argentine television program “Gracias por venir” and read the pontiff’s letter to viewers. The pope was responding to a letter he had received from Gustavo Masó, an Argentina artist.
Clark read “Thanks for your letter of the 20th. It allowed me to reconnect with Gustavo. It’s out of habit that we put life away as in an archive. And life goes on. Wait. It disappears and then reappears. The cruelest archivist is forgetfulness. He was right, our Borges (ed. Jorge Borges, Argentina’s world famous writer), when he told us ‘only one thing I have not achieved: it’s forgetfulness’. Yes, with regard to God. But amongst ourselves, forgetfulness exists and it is cruel. Thanks for giving breath to the breezes of a memory.”
"Please tell Lilian that her witness has done me a great good, her courage in continuing to wait, and that I am with her. It is difficult to say anything more about a relationship as sacred as the one between a mother and a son. But I hope that she will accept that my silence has become a prayer. I am at her disposal. Please, I ask her to pray for me. May Jesus bless her and the Holy Virgin watch over her.”
The pope’s letter was dated August 28th and bore the papal seal, according to Clark.
Gustavo Cerati, who was once at the zenith of Argentine and Latin America rock music, has been in a coma since May 15, 2010, after suffering a stroke while in Venezuela. He is unable to speak and is nearly paralyzed. Cerati was the leader of Soda Stereo, a band that formed in 1983 and recorded several records before breaking up in 1997. He went on to record several solo albums, including Amor Amarillo (Yellow Love) and Canción animal (Animal song). He was born in 1959.
