In an analytical piece by Salena Zito of the New York Post, titled "Why no one is talking about Trump’s game-changing deal," she notes the lack of attention that establishment media have paid to a deal President Donald Trump worked out with China that will mean thousands of jobs for Americans. Zito referred to an $83.7 billion “memorandum of understanding, to create a number of petrochemical projects in West Virginia over the next 20 years.” Reporting on the development was scant in major newspapers.
According to the New York Post, the agreement may be an “economic game changer” for West Virginia that will bring in investment from China Energy. “I am surprised I heard nothing about it on the national news, nor in my local paper and newscasts,” said the 67-year-old Jerald Stephens of West Virginia native and union rep. The BBC and CNN picked up the story for their business sections, while The New York Times carried a brief report from The Associated Press. Referring to President Trump, Stephens said, “We really have no influence or power here, so that is interesting to me that he still kept his promise to us, something I suspect he will likely get little credit for in the national news,” Stephens told the New York Post.
According to a press release from West Virginia’s Department of Commerce, China Energy announcement in West Virginia was the largest investment in a series of projects in US corporations and other states totaling a reported $250 billion of investment in the United States. The release said that the project will proceed in phases over the next 20 years, focusing on power generation, chemical manufacturing, and underground storage of natural gas liquids and derivatives. “The plans clearly demonstrate a total value chain approach, integrated from raw materials through the production of useful chemical intermediates locally,” the release said.
"This is a great day for the state of West Virginia," said West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice. "I've been saying for the last couple months that the tides are turning in West Virginia and this is proof. Today is another sign as we joined with my good friend President Trump to announce the largest investment in our state's history." China Energy selected West Virginia for this project, said the release, because of the State's position as a key energy-producing state and home to one of the world's largest shale gas reserves, underpinned by a longstanding relationship between the two entities.
This would not be the first time the media has ignored Trump’s economic accomplishments. Since the November 8, 2016 election, the Dow has increased 4,830 points and the Dow all time high has increased by 4,527 since then. The all time high on Election Day was 18,636, which was set on August 15, 2016. In addition, the Dow has surpassed five major milestones – 19,000, 20,000, 21,000, 22,000 and 23,000. This is the first time this has happened in less than a year in American history.
