For any posters who have done reading in this area, can you tell me which books would be the standard works from a Roman Catholic perspective on natural law ethics?

Thanks.

Okay, thanks for the info.

Squirrel,

I think the best you can say is that Charles Rice is a leading proponent of natural law within the legal community and that his beliefs are in line with the Catholic Church when natural law is applied to matters of faith and morals.

If you want the "accepted view of natural law in the Catholic Church," I'd recommend you read Aquinas's parts of the Summa in regard to it.

Should I understand Charles Rice to be a standard proponent of a widely accepted view of natural law in the Roman Catholic Church?

Thanks so far for your suggestions/links. I appreciate it.

I found a couple of his essays on subjects in law online, but they were very specific and technical. Here's an article on the prudential use of the death penalty which is a bit more readable -- I also found book reviews saying that the book Theo recommended is very readable:

The Death Penalty Dilemma

Interesting to contrast this with this other article which goes into greather depth regarding Catholic teaching and the death penalty:

Showdown in Texas: The Pope vs. the Culture of Death

This site looks like it has good resources too... though they may not be online. Theo will recognize at least a couple more of these names from Notre Dame:

Eleven books and ten essays on Natural Law

There are lecture notes from a series of his lectures summarizing the book online:

"Natural Law: What It Is and Why We Need It"

Have you read anything by him?

50 Questions on the Natural Law: What It Is and Why We Need It by Charles E. Rice.

I don't know particular books, but I know Charles Rice, a professor of law emeritus at Notre Dame Law School, was a natural rights guy. He might have something out there.
