Mohler says insurance mandate not just 'Catholic' issue

By Bob Allen, Managing Editor of Associated Baptist Press

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (ABP) – A Southern Baptist seminary president applauded Roman Catholic bishops for refusing to obey an insurance mandate forcing employers to offer coverage for contraceptives and sterilization, and predicted that evangelical leaders will soon face similar choices.

“Our religious liberty is being similarly subverted and attacked,” Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, said of the Obama administration’s inclusion of pregnancy in “preventive services” that health insurers must provide.

In his daily podcast briefing Jan. 31, Mohler commented on a letter from bishops read in Catholic churches Jan. 27 stating in part, “We cannot -- we will not -- comply with this unjust law.”

“You at least have to admire the courage of the Roman Catholic bishops in saying they are willing to go to jail rather than to comply with this,” Mohler said. “How many evangelical presidents and pastors and leaders will be willing to do the same? We’re going to find out in the coming months.”

Mohler said the insurance mandate “is not only a Catholic issue,” even though the mainstream media wants to present it that way. Not all Christians agree with the Catholic Church’s teaching against all forms of artificial birth control, he said, but they must be united in opposition to abortion.

Because the insurance mandate includes “morning after” pills that prevent pregnancy by causing spontaneous miscarriage of a fertilized egg, Mohler said, evangelical seminaries and colleges that teach that life begins at conception “will also be covered by this mandate and thus violate our own consciences.”

In the meantime, Mohler said, “everyone who stands both for the sanctity of human life and for the mandate of religious liberty must express outrage in whatever form is available to us to the president of the United States.”

Mohler also expressed hope for “remedial legislation” and court action “to restore religious liberty to Christian institutions to operate in a Christian manner on the basis of Christian conviction in supposedly free America.”

Baby3, you must be younger than I am because I remember my mother phoning all the Protestant churches in my home town, and NONE of them, including the Baptists, were formally against Abortion (this was in the 70's). They became against abortion when my mother educated them as to what abortion was and how prevelant it was becoming.

I remember many Protestant Churches publically mocking the Catholic Church for its position against abortion. Many of them now stand side by side with us.

For many Protestant churches, it is not that they ever really favoured abortion, though some did, but mostly they just did not feel that it was an issue for Christians - soul winning was the priority and everything else just did not matter. The tune is changing today as more and more Christians are realizing that sin has a big effect on us and must be dealt with rather than ignored.

Yes, this is not just a Catholic issue. And just as we stood firm against abortion from the beginning, it is time that more Christians understood that there comes a time when standing up for their faith means more than just saying amen in their living rooms.

Faith for your own information Baptist were always against abortion as long as I can remember way back. They are also standing at the abortion sites in Augusta and pray three times a week from their busy schedule and it is cold out there. The Catholics are not the only ones who care about babies and woman and children.
I feel if anyone wants to have sex let them do this between themselves and God but why should I'm pay for someone to play safe sex and then abort when they want? NADA This is against all religions and this should never be. I don't want to pay for them to be able to sin all they want and kill after. This is a sin we should ever have to pay for this ever! The question is this. What can we do as people to stop it????Who can help where do we get our help from??? Pray for a leader who will listen pray for a man or woman who really cares about the lives of others, and the respect of others beliefs!B3
