Contraception

Posted on 07/29/2012 at 05:05:09  |  Reply  |  Report Abuse |  1
My Second Life discussion group is still going strong - we have discussed many difficult topics, and this week is no different. The topic is "Contraception" and I am in search of up-to-date information. The booklets I have on this and other important life issues is about 10 years old, so I would feel better using something more recent as a source. Any suggestions?

Are you discussing strictly the Catholic position on the matter, or are you also including scientific studies that vindicate the Catholic position, and/or NFP methods and their effectiveness?

There is no way to predict which way discussion will go - it will run the gamut, I'm sure -- but in preparation I usually put together 10-15 discussion questions. For those I'd planned to cover the Catholic position mainly, although supporting that with science would be useful.

Tell the people the truth why catholics are so strong on contraception.
It's so people will have big families, So the catholic church can get more money.

My brother is not Catholic but has five kids and is not at all wealthy. Having a big family does not in any way ensure wealth.

God provides for those who trust in His providence, but my understanding is that most people, Protestant or Catholic, tend to have fewer children in order to have more money. Those that have more children are not running child labour camps to make more money.

God says that children are a blessing and sent us forth to be fruitfull and multiply. Those that use contraception are not trusting in God's providence and are not complying with the Will of God.

I've heard that same statement about black people, Mexicans, Moslems. Usually comes from some paranoid conspiracy nut who is whining about minorities taking over, and cannot deal with the fact that their own birth control beliefs are the real reason.

I find it interesting that once again G4 fits the profile.

My fiancee works in a medical clinic. She has requested and obtained permission from the board of directors not to administer the depo shot, but if Obama gets his way she will have no choice. Certainly a lot has changed in 10 years. With the HHS mandate in place there should be no shortage of discussion points especially if you're covering the Catholic position. I hope we keep this thread going for awhile, I would also like to study it from a scientific ethical viewpoint as well. I'll keep in touch.

Diana, if you could obtain a copy of Christian Ethics by Denise Lardner Carmody it would be an excellent source. It goes into great detail about medical ethics and the science behind issues such as contraception, all from a Catholic perspective. The problem is its a little dated (2001) but nevertheless it should provide some valuable input. Ill continue looking, though.

So tell me, why did the early Protestants, including the reformers, condemn contraception? It wasn't really a debate until recently.

And would you prefer that the Catholic Church acquire wealth using the tricks that many Evangelicals use?

Diana, maybe "Love, Reason, and God's Story" by David Cloutier. It's pretty recent (2010). Or something by Kimberly Hahn. Doing a research paper on contraception apparently jumpstarted her conversion, and she has written a few books on the subject since.

Thank you all for the resources! I will do what I can to review them before Wednesday's discussion.

That doesn't take away the catholic churches reason for it teaching on contraception.
