That phrase is used to complete the Passover ritual. It does not mean "paid" in this context, but rather it is finished or or it accomplished, fulfilled. John's Gospel account sets up the passion and death of our Lord in the context of the Passover sacrificial ritual. From the beginning, John describes Jesus as the Lamb of God, to stress that Jesus Christ is the Paschal Sacrifice that frees us from the slavery of sin just as the original paschal sacrifice freed the Hebrews from the slavery of Egypt. Even the crucifixion is set up to coincide with the slaughter of the Paschal lambs in Jerusalem to drive home this point.
At the end of a Passover meal (as was done at the time of Christ), after the fourth cup of wine is drunk, the president of the ritual in the household says a line that closes the ritual - it is consummated. Jesus in John's account said this line after drinking from the sour wine (vinegar) on the hyssop branch - every detail in that account is deeply symbolic. Even the hyssop branch is from the very first passover, used then to paint the blood of the sacrificial lamb upon the door posts and sills of the homes of the Hebrews to mark the houses to be passed over by the angel of death.

"There are some in the Church, who not only do not do what is good, but even persecute it, and hate in others what they neglect to do themselves. The sin of these men is not that of infirmity or ignorance, but deliberate willful sin." — Pope St. Gregory the Great (AD 540-604)

Good question, KK.
And thanks for the answer, FaL.
Here's another one: When Jesus used the word 'similar' to bring the "Love God" commandment and the "Love thy neighbour" commandment together, does it equate to the English 'similar'? No rush, take your time, or phone a friend

With gas prices on the rise and money becoming tighter, you just cant afford to be getting speeding tickets. The sad thing is that speeding tickets can be avoided with a decent radar detector. By decent I don’t mean a hundred dollar cobra from Wal-Mart, if you want any kind of warning from it you are going to have to shell out about two hundred dollars. These cheap models are nothing but a “ticket” detector; they let you know when you are about to get one. These cheap radar detectors are a dime a dozen and you really need to know which one is the best because it can be very confusing when trying to pick one out, believe me I have been there. I wasn’t born knowing all about the best radar detectors I have spent a few years scouring the internet searching for the white knight and I have found several. <a href="http://magicofmakingup.radardetectorhunt.com/radardetectorreviews.php">radar detector reviews</a> <a href="http://samsungun55d8000ledtv.com/radardetectorreviews.php">radar detector reviews</a> <a href="http://majormovesband.com/radardetectorreviews.php">radar detector reviews</a> <a href="http://howtogetmyboyfriendback.net/radardetectorreviews.php">radar detector reviews</a> radar detector reviews radar detector reviews radar detector reviews radar detector reviews
