The thing to do is to "stay put". I learned that the hard way. Cults will attack the ability of an ex-member to hold even a menial job in an effort to chase them away from any community that might establish a support network. It may be hard, but "staying put" always results in at least a small cluster of friends who are willing to ignore the slander and assaults. It also establishes the persistence of the cult's malicious behavior if they don't leave you alone. During that time it is usually possible to establish contact with at least one investigator who can enable prosecution for crimes when it is appropriate. Sometimes it takes years to do this. A successful prosecution often requires a period of watching to see if the cult is deliberately fostering crime or if it is willing to cleanse itself of criminal individuals in its leadership. A trail of documents related to incidents will not only leave the names of witnesses in the police files, it will place those incidents in databases in case the same individual shows up committing the same crime in another location. And after making an appropriate report, you are free to get back to your own life.
