Roman Catholic Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann has asked Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to refrain from presenting herself for Holy Communion until she takes "the necessary steps for amendment of her life which would include a public repudiation of her previous efforts and actions in support of laws and policies sanctioning abortion." Governor Sebelius received communion in one of the parishes in Archbishop Naumann’s jurisdiction, according to the Catholic leader’s statement on the diocesan website.

Referring to Gov. Sebelius’ veto of legislation passed by the Kansas legislature, Archbishop Naumann said in his message “I received the impression the governor considered it a waste of the Legislature’s time to pass a statute that attempts to protect some women by making certain they have the opportunity to be well-informed: 1) about the development of their unborn child; and 2) about abortion alternatives available to them. Evidently, the governor does not approve of legislators devoting energy to protecting children and women by making it possible to enforce existing Kansas laws regulating late-term abortions.”

The bishop said that Gov. Sibelius had shown a lack of respect for the members of the Kansas legislature who passed anti-abortion legislature to her for signature while saying that she is “over-reaching” when she claimed to actually lower abortion rights in her state.

Although a practical Catholic, Governor Sebelius was identified by NARAL – a pro-abortion group – as a “pro-choice” candidate during her 2006 gubernatorial campaign.

Governor Sebelius received considerable campaign contributions from abortionist George R. Tiller MD – who is currently facing 19 criminal charges, a grand jury investigation, and two open investigations with the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts for criminal conduct and violations of the standard of care according to a press release by Operation Rescue.

"We believe evidence exists that shows that Sebelius has strong personal and political ties to Tiller, and has used her political influence to cover up for crimes committed by Tiller and his associates in order to maintain the flow of abortion money into Kansas politics, thus furthering her own political career," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman.

"Sebelius stands in open rebellion to the teachings and requests of her Church," said Newman. "We join Archbishop Naumann in calling on Sebelius to repent from her support of abortion and to amend her life to undo some of the human devastation and tragedy for which her public policies and private cover ups are responsible."

Dr. George R. Tiller’s abortion practice is located in Wichita KS and advertises itself as having “an unparalleled record of safey (sic) in late abortion services and we have more experience in late abortion services over 24 weeks than anyone else currently practicing in the Western Hemisphere, Europe and Australia.”
