Two Spanish homosexual men, joined in an equivalent to matrimony, have adopted a child in Barcelona. This makes them the first “gay” married couple in Spain to adopt a child legally in Spain, according to the Family Forum of Spain. The councilor for Welfare and Family Life of the Barcelona government, Carme Figueras, announced this development at the International Forum on Childhood and the Family held in Barcelona. The boy in question had been in the homosexual couple’s custody, while his adoption took place after the July 2005 approval by the Spanish Congress of a law allowing homosexual marriage.

Since the approval of the gay marriage law, some 28 adoption proccedings have been introduced by homosexual couples in Catalonia (the Spanish province wherein Barcelona is located) alone; 20 of these have been initiated by males and 8 by females. The vicepresident of the Family Forum of Spain, Benigno Blanco, said that until now adoptions by homosexuals had been undertaken by unattached  lesbians and male gays who had merely co-habitated.

Blanco emphasized that the passage of the “gay” marriage in 2005 “not only violates the Constitution, but also the most fundamental rights of a human being.” He went on to say that “gay” adoptions are now “legal” but not “legitimate” from the point of view of the very basic principles of law, while adding that he is “greatly” concerned by the development.

For his part, Daniel Arasa – president of the Group of Family Organisations of Catalonia – said that he views “gay” adoption “very negatively…not just the fact of the couple by itself” but also because of “society’s general approbation” of it. “We reject this development then and we continue to reject it”, said Arasa while adding “this is not the good road to take.”
