In a 22-page report released yesterday, The Cardinal Newman Society says it found more than 150 “current and past connections” between U.S. Catholic colleges and universities and Planned Parenthood – the nation’s largest abortion provider.
The report, entitled “A Scandalous Relationship: Catholic Colleges and Planned Parenthood,” included mention of four Catholic centers of higher education in California.
Here are some excerpts from the report:
“The Counseling and Psychological Services at Mount St. Mary’s College (CA) offers a list of ‘Pregnancy and Parent Resources’ including the Santa Monica Center of Planned Parenthood and the Los Angeles Center of Planned Parenthood, noting that they provide ‘pregnancy options education,’ ‘information on pregnancy planning’ and ‘birth control.’ Also recommended is Catholics for Choice, which ‘helps Catholic women to make thoughtful decisions through respected publications that address Catholic doctrine and the moral and ethical issues involved in reproductive health decisions.’ The list recommends the Pregnancy Options website, which asks ‘Is this the right time for me to bring a new life into the world through my body?’ and ‘Abortion: Which method is right for me?’ The list also recommends sites for ‘family planning’ help.”
“The Department of Psychology at the Dominican University of California (CA) lists undergraduate field placements under the title ‘Strategic Initiatives and Partnerships,’ including Planned Parenthood,” the report said. “On the web page of Gail Matthews, a tenured professor of psychology at Dominican University of California (CA) who is identified as teaching the Psychology Department’s field placement course, is a link to a ‘short list of field placements’ including Planned Parenthood and another link to ‘field placement sites’ including Planned Parenthood.”
“Career Services at the University of San Diego (CA) refers students to website links for international nonprofits including the International Planned Parenthood Federation, the Alan Guttmacher Institute, Population Action International, the Population Council, the Population Institute and Population Connection,” said The Newman Society report. The USD website cited in the Newman report describes the International Planned Parenthood Federation as “Global humanitarian organization, provides healthcare to needy.”
“The Career Services Center at the University of San Francisco (CA) recommends ‘Career Field Resources’ including Planned Parenthood,” said the report. In addition, USF uses handouts from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services/Office of Women’s Health to advise students on various health concerns. For yeast infections and pregnancy tests, the handouts provide students with referrals to Planned Parenthood.
“If one considers -- from a faithfully Catholic perspective -- the fact that Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in the United States and a leading contributor to what Pope John Paul II labeled a ‘culture of death,’ any relationship to Planned Parenthood or those who have worked for such an organization is simply unacceptable,” said a Newman Society introduction to the report. “In no way can the work of Planned Parenthood be considered compatible with the mission of Catholic higher education or the moral teachings of the Catholic Church.”
