List of global warming activists, now skeptics

Growing number of major scientific figures convert to skeptics after reviewing new research

Following the U.S. Senate's vote today on a global warming measure, there is a shift taking place in climate science. Many former believers in catastrophic man-made global warming have recently reversed themselves and are now climate skeptics.  The names below are just a sampling of the prominent scientists who have spoken out recently to oppose the perceived alarmism of man-made global warming.

The media's climate fear factor seemingly grows louder even as the latest science grows less and less alarming by the day.  It is also worth noting that the proponents of climate fears are increasingly attempting to suppress dissent by skeptics.

Once Believers, Now Skeptics

Geophysicist Dr. Claude Allegre, a top geophysicist and French Socialist who has authored more than 100 scientific articles and written 11 books and received numerous scientific awards including the Goldschmidt Medal from the Geochemical Society of the United States, converted from climate alarmist to skeptic in 2006. Allegre, who was one of the first scientists to sound global warming fears 20 years ago, now says the cause of climate change is "unknown" and accused the “prophets of doom of global warming” of being motivated by money, noting that "the ecology of helpless protesting has become a very lucrative business for some people!" “Glaciers’ chronicles or historical archives point to the fact that climate is a capricious phenomena. This fact is confirmed by mathematical meteorological theories. So, let us be cautious,” Allegre explained in a September 21, 2006 article in the French newspaper L'EXPRESS. The National Post in Canada also profiled Allegre on March 2, 2007, noting “Allegre has the highest environmental credentials. The author of early environmental books, he fought successful battles to protect the ozone layer from CFCs and public health from lead pollution.” Allegre now calls fears of a climate disaster "simplistic and obscuring the true dangers” mocks "the greenhouse-gas fanatics whose proclamations consist in denouncing man's role on the climate without doing anything about it except organizing conferences and preparing protocols that become dead letters." Allegre, a member of both the French and U.S. Academy of Sciences, had previously expressed concern about manmade global warming. "By burning fossil fuels, man enhanced the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which has raised the global mean temperature by half a degree in the last century," Allegre wrote 20 years ago. In addition, Allegre was one of 1500 scientists who signed a November 18, 1992 letter titled “World Scientists' Warning to Humanity” in which the scientists warned that global warming’s “potential risks are very great.”

Geologist Bruno Wiskel of the University of Alberta recently reversed his view of man-made climate change and instead became a global warming skeptic. Wiskel was once such a big believer in man-made global warming that he set out to build a “Kyoto house” in honor of the UN sanctioned Kyoto Protocol which was signed in 1997.  Wiskel wanted to prove that the Kyoto Protocol’s goals were achievable by people making small changes in their lives. But after further examining the science behind Kyoto, Wiskel reversed his scientific views completely and became such a strong skeptic, that he recently wrote a book titled “The Emperor's New Climate: Debunking the Myth of Global Warming.”  A November 15, 2006 Edmonton Sun article explains Wiskel’s conversion while building his “Kyoto house”: “Instead, he said he realized global warming theory was full of holes and ‘red flags,’ and became convinced that humans are not responsible for rising temperatures.” Wiskel now says “the truth has to start somewhere.”  Noting that the Earth has been warming for 18,000 years, Wiskel told the Canadian newspaper, “If this happened once and we were the cause of it, tha

Some Guy:

Please make the effort to educate yourself about what the other side has to say. An excellent place to start would be to view The Global Warming Swindle, featuring some 17 eminent scientists, many of whom were for a good long time situated prominently in the Global Warming camp (among whom were a founding editor for Scientific American Magazine, as well as a founding member of Green Peace). I believe you'd find the list fascinating. Even more fascinating is getting to see and hear these scientists themselves explain how it is they came to reconsider their views on Global Warming: they could not get past the evidence contrary to it.

Granted, the SperoNews article is short on examples. I don't fault you at all for your skepticism there. But you won't have to look far to find the others that were inexplicably left off of its list. They do exist, there is a dramatic number of them, and you will find that they are heavyweights in the scientific realm, particularly in relation to the subject of Global Warming.

Please. Watch the above-mentioned video. Consider the notable number of prominent scientists featured therein (many of whom at one time were staunch members of the Global Warming community). Now, compare that number to the number of actual scientists cited in Al Gore's imaginatively constructed video, An Inconvenient Truth. Illustrations, computer models, projected outcomes and alarming conclusions aside (and all these can and have been manipulated mathematically), you'll see that real science is on the side of those who've come around to the truth on these things; true scientists, whose commitment to truth has led them to lay reputation, status, and their very careers aside, if need be, for the sake of true science, knowing the ridicule they stand to receive from the (compromised) scientific establishment for their politically incorrect views. It isn't hard to realize that politics rules the scientific realm, just as it has many others. Should that be so hard to imagine, in light of political history?

I believe you will find a cursory viewing of The Global Warming Swindle sufficient to prove which of the two camps is genuinely supported by true, documentable science. I like to challenge every honest, clear-thinking citizen to view the two contrasting films and decide for themselves which of the two bears the weight of true science behind it, which one is it that bears the marks of true science, and is supported by documented scientific fact.

It is a common but incorrect assumption that the great weight of public opinion lies in the direction of the truth, and upon proven facts, when, in fact, the masses have proven time and again susceptible to propaganda and manipulation of the facts. Political ambitions have more than once, in the history of mankind, been employed to mislead the public. There is an agenda behind Global Warming (now conveniently referred to as "Extreme Climate Change" since the onset of some of the coldest temperatures on record and extreme weather this past winter...). One would do well to undertake a little investigation of the lesser known agenda driving the United Nations. The global warming scare plays very nicely to a covert (but not undocumented) socio-political agenda.

We owe it to ourselves to stand up and think like individuals, question the status quo, and, if need be, take a stand against it. The masses of humanity have a tendency to let the weight of socio-political pressure lead them to embrace or follow things unproven or covertly constructed to deceive and dominate. History presents us with plentiful examples of this very thing. We are far better advised to hesitate following the masses anywhere, and to think for ourselves. A little investigative work has often rewarded the skeptic with little-known but documented, undeniable facts, oftentimes deliberately obscured.

Is it possible for an overwhelming majority of people to be wrongly mistaken about something? History answers YES. Truth is incidental in the numbers game. The vast majority never looks past the surface of what they've been told.

Some guy:
You say, in relation to AGW mitigation, that ‘ the only one over which we have any control , and our only shot at saving ourselves, is to buy ourselves time by reducing our CO2 output’.
This isn’t exactly true.
Many scientists [ including the very vocal and activist James Hansen of NASA'>, have known for years about the role of black carbon in warming the atmosphere, and yet all the concentration has been on trying to re-order the world and bring about world and national upheaval , with all sorts of emissions trading schemes---anything but tackling a problem , that if mitigated, could have a much more immediate impact than drastic measures to curb CO2.
An article by NASA Goddard Institute scientist, Drew Shindell, published a week ago in Nature Geoscience, describes the effect of black carbon, and says that ‘reducing it can bring about almost immediate mitigation of warming, whereas decreases in temperature lag reductions in CO2 by 1000 years or more.

http://climatechangepsychology.blogspot.com/2009/04/drew-shindell-greg-faluvegi-black.html
Doesn’t it seem strange to you that these AGW scientists , who claim such fears for ‘the planet’----who wring their hands in anguish over the Arctic ice extent----and prescribe drastic measures [ even mad and probably dangerous'> geo-engineering measures'>, to ‘save the planet’---who have the ear of Al Gore and of governments of every country in the world and have succeeded in gaining credibility and huge funding for themselves around the world, while demonising all dissenting scientists-----nevertheless are not clamouring for more simple and apparently infinitely more effective measures to be adopted------ like and end to deforestation and burning of forests and destruction of peatlands, and the promotion of a huge program of reforestation?
If those ‘tenured, well-paid professors’ you speak of ---committed AGW true believers----actually do believe and care [ and are not just going with the funds flow, and the feel-good'>---then why would they not be using their enormous clout and opportunities, to have the mitigation of black carbon made priority one, even while renewables are being developed?
Their failure to do this suggests that their agenda and their belief is otherwise.

Actually, tens of thousands of legitimate scientists have now publically repudiated manmade global warming.

http://www.petitionproject.org

And a large number of climatologists are included in this camp, many former believers.

http://iceagenow.com/Climatologists_Who_Disagree.htm

Not nearly as many hard scientists support the theory of manmade global warming, but a great many soft "scientists" (i.e., psychologists, nutritionists, acupuncturists, reflexologists) do, skewing the numbers published by the UN and the Press.

As someone who has lived on the Gulf of Mexico for most of my life, I can say with absolute certainty that sea levels have NOT risen during this time, hurricane activity has NOT increased, and severe storms are no more frequent here now than when I was a child.

Some of the world's foremost experts on the subject have also noted that sea levels have not changed.

If you do a Web search on "global warming hoax," "global warming fraud," or "global warming scam" you will find dozens of excellent SCIENTIFIC sites debunking the global warming CO2 hypothesis. All you have to do is look.

Interesting to note that the "long list" is only two people, and that neither of them seems to have reversed their view that CO2 is a greenhouse gas, which is an observable fact. Other factors are at play (sunspots, methane, and natural cycles), but the only one over which we have any control, and our only shot at saving ourselves, is to buy ourselves time by reducing our CO2 output so that scientists can develop adequate technological sinks for methane and CO2. This is some biased reporting, right here. What about the 99.99% of tenured, well-paid professors who have found no cause to change their minds? What about the possibility that THESE guys are the ones being paid off?
