No Jesus for Obama

William Donohue of the Catholic League bashed Georgetown University for "cowardice" in covering up religious symbols for President Obama's April 14 speech at the Catholic institution.

When I invite a guest to my home, they not only have the opportunity to visit me, they also have the opportunity to see some things that are important to my spiritual life. My spiritual life is a big part of my life. If someone who comes to visit is offended by these symbols, they don't need to be there. Obama is a guest. I don't care who he is. He has no business telling people to remove symbols important to their values or faith. If they do this at Notre Dame, I hope all their wealthy alumi pull their funding. I will NEVER apologize for my faith. NEVER.

The chief rabbi in Israel has insisted that Pope Benedict should remove his pectoral cross before visiting the western wall (see: http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?newsid=1240383). I seem to recall, correctly or not, that during the great interfaith meetings at Assisi during the late Pope John Paul II's pontificate they reportedly removed the crucfixes from the rooms that were used for prayer by other religions. If that is true, then I wish they hadn't done that, and I wish that Pope Benedict doesn't take off his cross either. We shouldn't be acting as though there were something scandalous or inappropriate about the things we believe. Certainly not to satisfy the demands of a secular US President, either.

They should leave the crucifixes on the site, and if the president then says that he won't do the talk because they are there, then let him cancel it.
