Will Obama testify to Congress on Russia probe?

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich appeared on Fox News' "Fox and Friends" on Tuesday, predicting that Barack Obama will be called to testify about how his administration handled internal reports about alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 general election. Gingrich said, "The Congress is about to have to call Barack Obama in to testify under oath about when he knew about Russia meddling."

Gingrich asked rhetorically, "How can you be told the president of the U.S. knew last August the Russians were, in fact, involved in this and not ask him and ask him under oath? I mean, how can you be so irresponsible?" Gingrich added, "The House and Senate are going to have to call Obama in and say, 'who told you?' 'When did you have the meetings?' 'Who advised you?' 'Why did you not decide to do anything? 'And then, 'why did you keep quiet for six months while everybody looked at the Russians and Trump when you, in fact, had this information last August?'"

Gingrich predicted that the coming "big Russian story" will be about Obama instead of President Donald Trump, despite the current investigations into the latter over supposed collusion with Russian agents during last year's campaign.

It was on June 23 that the Washington Post reported that Obama and senior intelligence officials learned in August 2016 that Russia had been attempting to interfere in the election. However, they did not share that knowledge with the public until October. Obama has been faulted for the failure: Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), who leads Democrats on the key House Committee on Intelligence, said it was a serious mistake. Former Obama administration insiders also said that they dropped the ball last year in the midst of the campaign.
