An armed security officer at a charter school in Michigan left a firearm unattended in a school restroom on January 14. Matt Young, director of Chatfield School in Lapeer, said that the security officer was responsible for a "breach in security protocol" by leaving an unloaded firearm in a school restroom for just a few moments.
The school has since been in contact with local law enforcement but would not reveal what actions, if any, it will take against the security officer in question. Declaring that it is a personnel matter, the school refused to name the officer.
In a statement, Young said "The school has put additional security procedures in place that follow local law enforcement practics and guidlines." No children were apparently exposed to the handgun or to any danger, declared Young, who added 'At no time was any student involved in this breach of protocol."
Lapeer is located in the largely rural lower eastern portion of Michigan north of Detroit.
