Yesterday, I asked what people thought about annulments and are they a way for the Catholic Church to make money. Given that there were no comments left, I trust that means that everybody knows this is a myth.
I'm not saying that there are some places where the costs may be more expensive than in other regions, but if you look at the actual amount, I think it can readily be seen that it barely covers administrative work. The price is usually divided in two payments, at the start of the process and once it's finished.
In my own particular case, the annulment fee was $200. Think about it. It should be obvious that nobody is going to get rich on $200...given that there are such costs as stamps, letters, two advocates, defender of the bond, judges, etc.
And there's another thing...if a person doesn't have the money for an annulment, the process can still continue. In other words, money isn't an issue: even if a person is flat broke, an annulment can still be pursued.
I've heard that actually the Church loses money on anullments, due to the above and other costs. Perhaps somebody else out there might know a bit more about that.
