On an otherwise quiet Saturday morning, surveillance camera footage showed a spectacular accident that left the residents of Reading, in southern England, scratching their heads. In the video, a purple bus is shown careening through a turn as a 53-year-old man, Simon Smith, is seen walking down a sidewalk in the Berkshire city. Hurtling toward the unaware Smith, the bus knocked him down and threw his body some twenty-five feet down the path on Gun Street.

CCTV footage recorded at the nearby Purple Turtle bar showed the shocking moment that Smith was nearly killed. In apparent shock, Smith got up from the pavement after the bus nearly ran over him and walked into the nearby pub. He suffered painful bruising and was hospitalized after the accident. Two friends visited him in hospital and found that he was marveled that he was still alive. A nearby brick wall showed the impact of the bus that belatedly braked.

No charges have been filed. Reading Buses -- which owns the bus in question -- admitted that it was an awful incident.. The bus company is conducting an internal investigation. BBC credited him with fulfilling the British maxim: “Keep calm and carry on.”
